The Cornell University rape case making headlines right now exemplifies the experience of being a woman in this repugnant empire. Whether it’s at school, at work, at a party, or in the home, sexual violence is a constant threat. This society is dominated by patriarchal social relations, from the frontiers of AI pumping more and more violent and degrading porn into people’s phones, to the rapists, frat boys, and Epstein-list predators who run this country, mocking and belittling women while stripping away the legal rights and protections for women that do exist.
Nowhere is the violent patriarchal culture of US capitalism-imperialism more reproduced and concentrated than in the fraternity. The brutal gang rape at Cornell is only the latest in a long string of incidents (Stanford’s Brock Allen Turner raping an unconscious woman in 2015, Yale fraternity pledges marching through campus chanting “no means yes” in 2010, just to name two) all occurring on college campuses, where the men who participate in this culture are taught that violently subjugating women is part of being an adult male. It’s no surprise that those same men rise to the top of a political system where they incinerate Iranian schoolgirls, profit from the economic exploitation of women and girls in sweatshops around the world, and demonize transgender women.
The patriarchal violence and the persistence of rape culture in the fraternity is a microcosm of the social relations that persist across the US, exposing how the oppression and domination of women is a foundational part of the functioning of capitalism-imperialism. Rapist men and the pigs who protect them are the shock troops of a system where women are systematically dominated by men, just like how the US military protects the rule of US imperialism over the rest of the world. Cases like the one right now at Cornell should provoke mass resistance: people of all genders should stand together to demand harsh punishment of the perpetrators and the shutting down of all frat houses. With rape culture pervasive throughout this country, and legal rights won by women and LGBTQ people under attack, there is an urgent need for mass resistance to patriarchal oppression that’s not constrained by the legal system and the “proper channels.” But beyond even mass resistance, there’s an urgent need for revolution.
The Organization of Communist Revolutionaries seeks to organize that mass resistance and is working to bring forth a revolutionary people that can overthrow this empire. If you are outraged by the Cornell case and want to bring down the entire system that made it possible, reach out to us at ocrev.org.
Break the chains―unleash the fury of women as a mighty force for revolution!
